Capt. Dick's Fishing Journal
Reports from the waters of Keuka Lake
Welcome to all who hit on this website!

We have had a great winter & spring in South Florida.  I didn't get as much fishing in as I had
hoped to.  Still we caught several species:  redfish, bluefish, ladyfish, channel catfish, mangrove
snappers, snook, and Jack Crevalle.
We just didn't catch any dinner!  That's okay...we love being on the water!
Time to head north to Keuka Lake, we hear the trout are waiting.
We should be back  in Hammondsport by May 19th.
9/30/07
KBF Charter with Kevin Michael and sons Calvin, Nick, and Luc.  We fished 6:30am to 10:30am.  Went 13 for 17.
We released all the fish after some pictures.  Air Temp seemed colder than yesterday.  The moon was bright and there
was fog rising off the water.  The bite was steady until about 8:30 and then it showed down.  I think we had only 5
hits between 8:30 and 10:30.  75% of the hits came on the Dipsy diver Spin doctor fly combo set with 114 ft of wire
out.  The stickbaits did not work well and I changed to flashers and flies and tried some spoons.
9/29/07
Fished KBF .  Cold front moved through yesterday.  We had clear skies and a full moon shining all night.  I did not
expect to do well, but we went 7 for 12. About equal hits between downriggers stickbaits and Dipsy diver flies.  The
fish were from about 38' down all the way to the bottom.  Had steady action until about 8:30am when we picked up
and quit.
Don't forget to get your new NY fishing license for 2007/2008.  They expire 9/30/07 and you will need a new one to fish
on Monday, October 1s
t.
9/28/07
Fished with Bobber....  6 for 11.  Caught a few fish today on stickbaits, but the majority of the hits were on the Dipsy
poles.
9/27/07
Fished KBF...8 for 13.  Same as yesterday, more fish on Dipsy diver combos at 144 to 160 feet of wire out.  Still using
green glow flies.
9/26/07
Fished with Bobber... went 7 for 12.  Most fish came on Dipsy poles.  Overcast hiding the coming full moon.  The fish
hit a little hard today as if they were hungry.
9/25/07
KBF Charter with Doug & 5 year old son, Giacamo Gentles, Joe,Dennis, and Jamie Vai and Frank Battiglia.  We
had a good day going 10 for 14.  Everyone landed at least one fish.  Five year old Giacamo landed 4 of the 10.  His
dad helped hold the pole, but Giacamo reeled them in.  We found fish and bait early, but about 8:30am they broke up
and disappeared.  We tried changing lures and caught a couple fish on fire plugs and stinger spoons.  Fished deeper
today as yesterday...48' and 65' on downriggers and 114 to 180 feet of wire out on Dipsy diver poles.  If the fish go too
much deeper, we will have to give up the Dipsy divers for another set of downriggers.
9/24/07
Fished with Bobber from 6:30am to 8:30am.  Warmer this AM and not so foggy.  Marked all kinds of bait in fish on
graph from 50' to 75'.  Caught and released 12 lakers about an even balance between the number of fish caught on the
downrigger vs the Dipsy diver combo.  Fished downriggers at 45' and 62' and Dipsy divers set at 97 and 114 feet of
wire.
9/23/07
Fished KBF.  Went 3 for 5.  Fished 6:30 am to 9am...cold and foggy.  Fish were widely scattered and very little bait
was marked on the graph.  What bait we marked was deeper than 2 days ago almost on bottom.  The fish we caught
came off the downriggers with stickbaits set at 65 and 75 feet.
9/22/07
Fished with Bobber. 6:30 to 8:30am.  60F, nice.  Went 5 for 9.  We were handicapped a little because we lost power to
the graph so we were fishing blind , you might say.
9/21/07
Fished KBF 6:30am to 8:45am.  54F @ 6:30am.  Went 7 for 12 with 2 of the fish boated in the 3-1/2 to 4-1/2 lb range.
Found the fish have dropped in water column.  Put down Thermo Troll and got the following readings:  Surface -
66.8F, 20' - 65.3F, 30' - 65.1F, 40' - 64.5F, 45' - 62.9F, 50' - 59.3F, 55' - 50.7F, 60' - 47.4F,  65' - 45.6f, 70' - 44.6F, 80' -
42.8F, 90' - 42.0F.  Fished stickbaits on downriggers set at 55 and 63 feet and Dipsy diver Spin doctor fly combo with
150' of wire out.
9/20/07
Fished with Bobber.  A little warmer this morning...50F.  Caught 4 lakers, had to watch poles.  Fish were hitting very
light.  Surface water temp 66F this AM.  Fish were all over the water column.  We caught 1 @ 24', 1@ 38', 1 @ 55'
and 1 @ 65'.  Two on Dipsy diver combo and 2 on stickbait on downriggers.  Fished 6:30am to 8:30am.
9/19/07
Fished KBF 6:30am to 8am.  42F again this AM.  Went 1 for 2.  Fish and bait at 55' to bottom.  Caught
fish on stickbait at 65'.  Had to fish north to find fish.
9/18/07
Fished with Bobber 6:30am to 8:30am, 42F ...foggy with south breeze.  Surface temperature has dropped from 72F last
week to 67.8F this morning.  Fish and bait were widely scattered.  Caught and released 2 lakers.  Found more fish and
bait in the middle of the lake in 130 feet of water.  The fish were down around 80 feet. Caught 1 fish on Glow green
stickbait and 1 on Dipsy diver combo with 150' line out.
9/17/07
KBF charter with Steve Illiano.  Cold 40F and foggy with a stiff breeze .  Fish and bait seemed to be scattered. When
we found bait we might get a hit.  When we tried to get back over the bait they had moved or scattered into smaller
schools.  We went 4 for 6.  We used Glow green stickbaits on downriggers set between 45 and 70 feet.  Tried a Blue
Spin doctor and blue fly on Dipsy diver and caught 1 fish on it.  Steve was interested in the various ways we fished so
I put down a Seth Green rig for an hour or so, but had no hits.  Fished 6am to 10am.
9/16/07
Bobber charter with John Saltsman and wife, Caroline and daughter, Tami.  Cold and foggy 40F.  We went 8 for 11
with everyone gettng a couple shot at landing a laker.  Went a little farther up the lake and fished deeper. Most of
thefish came from downriggers at 65 to 70 feet, Dipsy divers set with 150 to 170 feet of live out.
9/15/07
Fished with Bobber and took a friend who wanted to learn about downrigger fishing.  Ivan(aka Brown) was required
to wear a ski mask backwards while anywhere near the boat.  We had 6 hits and boated 4 lakers.  Fish were deeper
today than yesterday.  Caught fish at 70' with downrigger with Glow green stickbaits and had 190' of line out on
Dipsy diver Spin doctor fly combo.  We did let Brown remove the blindfold to see a little of what was going on.  It
had rained and thunderstorms went through during the night and it was cooler this AM.  Forecast for frost tomorrow
morning.
9/14/07
KBF Charter with the Chris Skipper wedding party that included friends Matt Keller, Max Power, Ryan & Seth Fick,
Jared Treichler.  Everyone had at least one chance at reeling in a fish as we went 5 for 9.  The guys seemed to have
had a good time needling each other while bringing in fish.  The weather is changing and the fish are moving.  When
we can find bait, we seem to get bites.  Used 2 downriggers & 2 Dipsy diver combos and a lead core.  No fish on the
lead core and only 3 hits on Dipsy divers.  The guys kept their 5 fish to have for lunch.  Good luck to you, Chris, and
may your marriage be happy and long.
9/13/07
Fished KBF 6:15am to 8:30am.  Cold 46F.  South wind 10mph, foggy.  2 for 3.  Fish had lockjaw this morning.
fished at the depths the fish were marked on the graph.  Should have hit them with the downrigger balls, but no dice.
Marked a lot of fish on bottom 120' to 130', but they didn't want anything I put down.  Washed a lot of different lures
this AM.
I took the boat back out at 2:30pm to watch a replica of Glenn Curtiss's
America, an amphibious biplane originally
built and flown in 1918.  They had motor problems and taxied the plane back to shore to work on the engines.  I put a
Dipsy diver down to 114 feet and caught a lake trout making the total for today 3 lakers.
9/12/07
Fished with Bobber 6am to 8:30pm...partly cloudy skies.  Cooler 48F slight breeze out of the south, went 10 for 17.
Again the Dipsy diver poles outdid the downriggers 2 to 1.  Dipsy diver poles set at 97 and 113 feet and downriggers
set at 32 and 38 feet.  Fished about the same area as yesterday out in front of Snug Harbor.
9/11/07
Fished KBF 6am to 8:30am.  Overcast skies ...went 8 for 12.  Fished out in front of Snug Harbor. Bait and fish seem to
have moved north a little.  Still up in the water column.  Most hits came on Dipsy diver rods set with 113ft of wire
out.  Glow green the favorite color.
9/10/07
Worked as mate for Bobber charter.  We had an 89 yr old gentleman who landed 14 lakers, ll of them were between
3-1/2  to 5 lbs.  We fished a little north of where we usually fish.  Out in front of Snug Harbor in the middle of the lake
,fish came on the Glow green stickbaits set at 50 and 60 feet on downriggers and Dipsy diver spindoctor fly combo
with 113 feet of line out.  Fished 6am to 10am under overcast skies.
9/9/07
Fished with Bobber in the rain.  Boated and released 8 lakers. Most the fish came on Glow green stickbaits at 40 and
55 feet on downriggers.  Fished 6:15am to 9am.
9/8/07
KBF Charter with Terry Mulhern, and friends, Bruce Ginder, Jay Hill and Peter Cleary.  We got a little bit of a late
start, but were able to have a couple of chances for everybody aboard to land fish.  We went 8 for 9 with all the fish in
the 3 to 4lb range.  We released 4 and kept 4 for dinner tonight.  We fished 2 downriggers with Glow green stickbaits,
2 Dipsy diver Spin doctor fly combos also green. Six fish came on the downrigger stickbait combo as 48 and 55 feet,
three on the Dipsy.  We fished 7am to 11am, 3 of the fish came in the last hour.  Got as far north as Two Mile Point.
9/7/07
Fished with Bobber.  The fish were hungry this morning.  We boated 12 fish had to keep one that was tangled in the
leader and came in backwards.  We started on the south end and fished about 2-1/2 miles north.  Most of the fish
came before 8am.  Only caught 3 between 8 and 9am.  Fish came pretty even on Dipsy combos and stickbaits on
downriggers set at 38' and 50' .  Dipsy rods at 83' and 143' of line out.  Glow green was good color.
9/6/07
Fished KBF went 5 for 9 still using Glow green at 45 to 65 feet.  Had one fish today that weighed 6 lbs that wouldn't
go back down and we had to keep it.  Fishing the south end, but the fish are starting to move a little bit north into 100'
to 110' of water.  The bait fish are not as high in the water either.
9/5/07
Fished with Bobber.  Boated and released 9 lakers.  Fished 6am to 8:30am.  Only boated 1 fish after 7:30am.  Fish
have moved down in the water column.  Fishing downriggers 45 to 65 feet.  Using 150' to 180' of wire on Dipsy
divers.  Tried blue and black & purple, but the fish still prefer the glow green.
9/4/07
Fished KBF. Boated 4 lakers.  Had to keep one due to deep hook.  Fish disappeared as soon as the sun came up.
When we did find some bait and fish, they didn't want to bite.  Caught fish at 60' on Glow green stickbaits on
downriggers.
9/3/07
Fished with Bobber.  Boated 14  lakers.  The biggest was 9-1/2, maybe 10lbs, several in the 4 to 6 lb range.  Released
all to grow up for another tournament.  We are thinking maybe we shouldn't fish the day after a tournament because it
seems we always catch today what we needed yesterday.  Fish came from a little deeper, 50' to 65' down.  Still using
Glow green stickbaits and green flies.
9/2/07
Fished aboard KBF with Tom Beers, Marty Smith and Jeff Luppino.  Fishing second day of Cagle Tournament.
Cold this morning 44F at 5:30am.  The lake was foggy and had to keep watch for other boats.  We went 5 for 9
releasing all but one fish and it was about 1 lb too light to place in the tournament.  Maybe its time to try something
else to get these fish to bite after the sun is up for awhile.
9/1/07
Fished on Bobber's boat with Marty Smith fishing Keith Cagle Memorial Tourney.  We understand that 41 people are
entered.  It is a biggest fish tourney.   We landed 6 fish with nothing over 3-1/2 lbs.  Took 3 fish to the scales to be
used Sunday for the fish fry.  Fish hit early again and quit about 8am.  Picked up 2 fish between 8 and 9:30am.  As of
4:30pm 8-1/2 lbs was the weight to beat.
2007

18 to 20 inch males.  Today was the last day I will fish , as Mary and I will head to Punta Gorda, FL tomorrow for
the winter. We plan to be back to Keuka next spring around May 21st or 22nd.  So to all who read this journal......
Happy Holidays have a safe winter and I will start up again in May when we return.
P. S.  Keep watch , I might slip in some news from Florida!
10/24/07
Fished with Bobber 7am to 8:30am.  Caught and released 3 fish again today we found no bait and the fish were
scattered.  Rain yesterday ...water temp dropped 1.5 degrees from 63.8F to 62.3F.  Put the Keuka Big Foot in the

10/20/07
Fished KBF 7am to 8:30am.  Caught and released 2 lakers and one 24" Northern Pike caught on the south end off the
bar stake in 55' of water.  Did not find the fish out in front of Snug this morning.
10/19/07
Fished with Bobber .  We caught and released 6 lakers today.  Fished 7am to 8:30am.  We did go north a little ways
this morning found bait and fish in front of Snug Harbor Restaurant north to Two Mile Point.
10/18/07
Fished KBF.  Kept the hooks out of my fingers today.  Fished 7:15 to 8:45am.  Caught and released 4 lakers.  We
have a feeling that the fish are getting ready to spawn and are moving north in the lake.  They don't seem to be with
the bait when we find it.
10/17/07
Fished with Bobber 6:45 to 8:30am.  The weather was warmer than predicted and also dry.  We went 4 for 4.  The
last fish of the morning was about 20" long and was hooked on a Storm Thunderstick Jr..  One set of trebles was in its
mouth an the other on the outside of its gill plate.  I grabbed the lure about middle of its back and removed the treble
in the gill plate.  When I did, the fish began to thrash and ..bingo...the fish and I were hooked together mouth of fish
to middle finger of my left hand.  I was able to remove the hook from the fish, but the hook embedded in my finger
was not coming out.  It was buried into the joint of my finger.  I cut the split ring holding the lure to the hook.  We
went back to the marina and up to the Emergency room and had the hook removed.  You hear about it and maybe
see it happen to others.  This is the first time for me and I have been fishing for 55+ years.  So be careful!
10/16/07
Fished KBF 6:45 to 8:30am.  3 for 6.  Fish were scarce this morning.  Found bait, but no fish on the south end in 80 ft
of water.  Just before we quit we went up the west side in about 115 ft of water and started marking fish and bait.  We
will try this out in the morning.
10/15/07
Fished with Bobber 6:30 to 8:30am.  8 for 15.  Lost a lot of fish as soon as they came to the surface. Using same
rigging as yesterday.
10/14/07
Fished KBF 6 for 14 6:30 to 8:30am.  Most of the hits came from 7:15 to 8am.  Fish south end as far north as Snug
Harbor.  Still using stickbaits at 45 to 50 and 60 to 65 ft.  Dipsy with Spin doctor and fly with 114 ft. of wire.
10/13/07
Fished with Bobber 6:30 to 9am, 50 for 10.  Fish still hitting light have to watch downrigger poles especially.   Just a
little bob and its either there or its gone.  Downriggers still set at 45 and 65 ft.  Dipsy poles with 114 ft of wire.
10/12/07
Fished KBF by myself  2 for 12.  The two fish I did boat were hooked very light in the lips .  Lost 6 or 8 fish as soon
as they got on top.  Took a ride up the 3 Mile Point across to Tanglewood and back to south end.  Did not mark any
bait and very few fish.  Was looking to see if they had started to concentrate on the points.  Not yet.  Fished 7:30 to
11am.
10/11/07
Fished with Bober 6:30 to 8:30am.  Went 5 for 7.  One on downriggers , the rest on Dipsy divers with Spin doctor and

with a dodger and fly with 144 ft of wire out.  The weather is supposed to turn colder with a high of low fifties.  We
will see what this does to the fishing.
10/9/07
Fished with Bobber.  Weather should have turned the fish on.  Overcast & warm, but they had lock jaw.  Had 1 hit
and lost it about 30 feet behind the boat.  0 today.
10/8/07
Fished KBF 6:30 to 8:30am.  Went 5 for 9.  Kept 3 fish for dinner tonight.  Fish all came on downriggers set at 55 and
65 ft.  Fire plugs, trout killers and dodger and fly fishing with the bags out to keep speed around 1.5 mph.
10/7/07
Fished with Bobber 6:30 to 7:45am.  Rain and thunder showers during the night.  6:30 weather was 70F calm wind
and lake, high humidity.  Caught and released 5 lakers , 2 that were 3 to 4-1/2 lbs.  All the fish came off the
downriggers set at 55
' and 65' with fire plugs and trout killers.  At 7:30am the wind came up from the NE and in 15
minutes we had white caps...so we packed it in and went for breakfast.
10/6/07
Fished KBF 6:30 to 9am...stayed on the south end in less than 110' of water.  Put the bags out to slow down the boat.
Went 8 for 10.  Most of the fish on downriggers with fire plugs and trout killers set at 55' and 65'.

almost to Gold Seal...found more fish, but they were deep ...100 to 130ft down and had lock jaw.
10/3/07
Fished with Bobber 6:30am to 8:30am.  Twice as good as yesterday, we went 2 for 3.  When we found bait the fish
were not with it.  The fish we marked were scattered from top to bottom.  We have also noticed a return on the spiny
water fleas the last couple of days.  Caught 1 fish on silver & copper spoon set at 65' and the other one on Dipsy
Spindoctor fly combo set with 144 ft of wire out.  The other hit was on the Dipsy pole.
10/2/07
Fished KBF 6:30am to 8:30am.  Very slow ...went 1 for 3.... 2 hits on Dipsy rods.  Caught the small laker on
downrigger.  The bait was harder to find today and when we found it, we didn't see the fish with them as in days past.
10/1/07
Fished with Bobber 6:30am to 8:30am.  Caught and released 8 lakers.  When we found bait we would get hits, caught
most of the fish on Dipsy Spin doctor fly combo with 114 ft of wire out.
6/30/08
Charter aboard KBF 6am to 10am, Ron & Lisa Blodgett on vacation from working in Kuwait.  We had a very slow
day and only boated one laker that was a beauty about 7 lbs.  It was the biggest trout that Ron had ever caught.  We
had a good time telling stories as I threw lure after lure at the fish without anymore luck.  Ron's laker came on
cowbells and a peanut set at 60' on the downrigger.  See the Gallery for picture.
6/29/08
Fished KBF Village Shore Marina Tournament.  Boated 6 lakers, the biggest 4 lbs, not enough to move us up any
higher than 3rd place, so the fish all went back into the lake.  Fish hit Spin Doctor Fly combo this morning.  Ran
into a lot of weeds on the south end and a current strong enough to see eddies behind marker buoys.  Today was the
last day of the tournament and we held on to our 3rd place finish.  Won enough to pay entry fees for the next month.
6/28/08
Charter aboard KBF  5:30 to 9:30am.  Tom Harris and 4 fo his friends.  Fishing very slow, caught two on
downriggers then a 2 hours shut out.  Switched on downrigger to cowbells and a peanut and caught 2 more , one of
the last two we would have had to stretch to make it legal.  So it went back.  The party went home with 3 lakers to
divvy up for dinner.
6/27/07
Fished KBF 5:30 to 8:30am.  Caught 4 lakers , 2 on Trout killers at 55' and 2 with cowbells with a peanut also set at
55'.  Dipsy Divers quiet again today.
6/26/08

on Trout killer set  45' on downrigger.
6/24/08
Fished with Bobber 5:30 to 8am.  Caught 3 fish by 6am.  Took 2 hours to catch the other two.  Three on Dipsy Spin

Dipsy set with 76' and 113' of wire out.  Marked a lot of bait and fish, but they were not eating what I was offering.
6/22/08
Fished with Bobber 5:30 to 8:30am.  Fishing was slow.  Went 3 for 4.  The water temp is waring up and we are
starting to collect spiney fleas on our line. Yuk!!  Make it difficult to land fish.
6/21/08
Charter aboard KBF 5:30 to 9:30am..  Bernie Dayne & party of five anglers.  We managed to boat 7 lakers that went
into the cooler for dinner later on that day.  We had a couple of fish an hour until 8am. Fish came on R &R spoons
set at 45' & 55' on downriggers and Dipsy Spin Doctor Fly combo.  After multiple line changes after 8am, I sent a set
of cowbells & peanut to the bottom with the downrigger and dragged it through the mud to pick up a couple more
lakers.  Everyone aboard was able to land a fish.
6/20/08
Fished with Bobber 5:30 to 8am  57F Air temp.  Surface temp 66F.  Overcast again this AM.  Went 5 for 12 with
biggest laker around 4 lbs.  Found fish on the west side of lake up to Snug Harbor.  Most hits came on Dipsy Spin
Doctor Fly Combo  65 to 70 ft of wire out.  Overcast turned to rain and thundershowers.
6/19/08
Fished KBF 5:30 to 8:15am.  54F Air temp overcast, south wind.  No bait,no fish.  Went 2 for 3 on RR Spoon @

6/18/08
Fished with Bobber  5:45 to 8:30am.  Went 8 for 12.  Kept four 3 to 3-1/2 lob lakers to smoke.  75% of fish came on
Dipsy Spin Doctor Fly Combo with 67 ft of wire out.  The rest came on RR Glow spoon set at 37 ft on downrigger.
6/17/08
Heavy overcast...57F breaking to partly cloudy by 8am.  Fished KBF with Bobber and my 7 year old granddaughter,
Catherine.  Catherine went 3 for 5 with 2 lakers, that we kept for dinner, and a 14" smallmouth bass that was released.
It was hard to explain to a 7 year old how the Fish and Game Laws work, but she released the bass to get bigger.
Water temp back down to 67F due to heavy rain yesterday.  We also had some hail.
6/16/08
Thunderstorms from midnight until about 6am.  Heavy rain...did not fish.  Worked on boat in prep for State

concerned about a noon time bite.  But the fish gods were good to us.  We finished the day with a 7 lb laker after
landing and releasing 8 lakers and a 3 lb brown.  This was the first brown in 2 years for the KBF boat.  We slowed
down from our normal 2.7 to 1.5 and put down dodgers with flies and cowbells and peanuts.  The brown came on
the dodger & fly, as well as the 7lb laker.  Fished downriggers at 50' to 70' and Dipsy divers with 120' to 150' of wire.

Charter aboard KBF 8am to 12 noon with the Patrick Cornaire family.  I had to resort to cowbells and peanuts and
a dodger with a sawbelly behind it to finally catch some fish. We boated and released 5 fish and I believe everyone
was able to pull one in.  Boat traffic picked up very fast after 10am on the south end.
7/4/08

Charter aboard KBF  5:30 to 9:30am with the Morrison Charter.  The morning started out very wet.  It rained quite
hard until about 7am.  We caught and released 8 lakers in the 2-1/2 to 3 lb range.  Seven of them came before 8am.
We caught fish on all of the rods out except the flat line.  The most came on the R & R Glow spoons set at 55' on
the downriggers.  The fleas are getting to be a big nuisance.  I put poles with flea flicker line on them on the
downriggers and still got big globs of fleas.
